2020 Spring Racing Event

The Spring Carnival is now behind us and so is our 2020 ‘Zoom’ Racing Event! We hope you were able to profit from some of the insights from the multitude of racing experts who stepped up to help us raise $240K for the Ruben Centre.

Leon Wiegard did a masterful job ensuring we could all hear from an array of big names including champion jockey, Wayne Harris, VRC Ambassador at Large, Joe McGrath, leading trainers Ciaron Maher, Peter Moody, Lindsey Smith and Archie Alexander, top owners Terry Henderson and Gerry Ryan (part-owner of the Cup winner, Twilight Payment), and international racing expert and commentator, Francesca Cumani. Leon was ably assisted by his podcast partner, Sam Kekovich.

As you can imagine, 2020 has been an incredibly challenging year in the Mukuru Slums where Government support through the pandemic has been virtually negligible. Thankfully, the team at the Ruben Centre has been a conduit for a great deal of private philanthropy including the $571K this Group raised via our AFL event in May. Lockdowns, school closures, curfews and other measures aimed at containing the spread of Covid-19 have led to significant health, social and economic issues for the people of Mukuru and Ruben has seen a surge in demand around mental health and maternity and other health and social programs. We are intent on helping the team at Ruben meet this surge.

Thanks again for all your support for the Ruben Centre in 2020 – they appreciate it enormously and use it so effectively. Over the last 21 years some of our largest donations have come from family, friends & colleagues of our Supporters so please do share our story when you can!
